Understanding Vaccinations
`
Vaccinations for Dogs
Bordetella
(Kennel Cough) - This vaccine is given every six months. It is
recommended for dogs that go to boarding kennels, grooming
establishments, training classes, dog shows or participate in
any other activity where dogs
congregate.
DHPP
(Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus) This
vaccine is given every three years after the initial series.
Previously unvaccinated dogs receive a booster three weeks after
the initial immunization.
Leptospirosis
This vaccine is given yearly.
Lyme
Disease This vaccine is recommended for those dogs who are
at risk. These are dogs who live near or walk in wooded areas or
fields where there is a high risk for tick exposure. The best
prevention method is year round tick control with a flea and
tick product.
Rabies
This immunization is legally required in the state of
Maryland. The first vaccination is repeated at one year, with
subsequent vaccinations being effective for three years.
Vaccinations for Cats
Feline
Leukemia This immunization is recommended for those cats who
go outside and may have direct interactions with other cats.
Feline Leukemia blood testing is performed prior to vaccinating.
A series of two vaccinations, two to four weeks apart, is given
initially, and then repeated once every year.
FVRCP
( Distemper, Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus) This vaccine is
initially given twice, two to four weeks apart. It is repeated
one year later, and then, for most cats, administered every
three years.
Rabies
This immunization is legally required in the state of
Maryland. Traditionally, the first vaccination is repeated at
one year, with subsequent vaccinations being effective for three
years. There is also a vaccine called Purevaxฎ, that shows
promise in reducing the risk of injection-site sarcoma
development. It has a one year approval rating and must be
repeated on an annual basis.
