Our goal is to make sure you and your pet feel safe throughout the surgical process. Our Frederick veterinarians will answer all of your questions about the procedure and walk you through what you can expect before, during, and after your pet’s surgery.

We schedule all of our surgeries based on the needs of our patients. If you have specific surgical requests or questions, please call (301) 888-6626 or contact us online.

Pre-Surgical Exam

Prior to your pet’s surgery, our Frederick veterinarians will make sure they are healthy and ready to undergo the procedure. We will conduct a full physical exam of your pet and also order laboratory tests. We take this step to ensure that surgery is the right treatment option for your pet’s condition as well as to make sure that we won’t have to worry about any complications or negative reactions to the anesthesia.

Post-Surgery & Aftercare

Aftercare is just as important as the surgery itself. We want to make sure your pet heals quickly and comfortably, so we will provide you with the resources you need. If you have any questions or concerns while your pet is healing, please do not hesitate to reach out to our veterinary team.

Steps to help your pet recover from surgery quickly and correctly:

  • Moderating activity – We recommend that you limit the amount of activity your pet engages in while they heal. Our Frederick surgical team will give you specific instructions as well as activities to avoid. Generally, we recommend that your pet avoids running and jumping shortly after surgery.

  • Feeding – Following surgery, your pet may have different reactions to the anesthetic. We will let you know when it is safe to feed your pet according to their normal feeding schedule. It’s also important to make sure your pet resumes eating and drinking regularly as they heal.

  • Monitoring the wound – Your pet’s surgical site will need to be monitored for signs of infection, such as discharge, swelling, or redness. You’ll also need to prevent your pet from licking or scratching the wound.

  • Administering medication – Most pets go home with prescriptions following their surgery, such as antibiotics or painkillers. We’ll give you instructions to make sure you understand when to give your pet their medication and how much to give them.

If you follow all of our post-surgery instructions, your pet’s recovery should go smoothly. If you notice anything amiss or suspect your pet has an infection, please call us. No question is too small and we’d much rather answer you quickly than jeopardize your pet’s health.

If your pet has a surgical procedure scheduled and you have questions, call (301) 888-6626 or contact us online.
